William Alec Breckenridge

William Alec Breckenridge, 91, of Madelia, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. William was born on July 4, 1924, in Northfield, MN to Hiram and Cinderella (Jones) Breckenridge. He attended Dundas Elementary and graduated from Northfield High School in 1941. He married LaVonne Lundquist on May 17, 1947 at the Little Prairie Church outside of Dundas. He served as a Torpedo Man 2nd Class (TM2/c) in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944 - 1946 aboard the USS Haynsworth DD-700 in the Pacific. Upon honorable discharge, he worked with his brother John driving farm milk trucks. He then went to school for truck mechanics and worked at the Jake DeMann Chevrolet Garage in Dundas. Starting in the 1950's, he worked as a driver for Breckenridge Trucking, hauling live turkeys to the turkey plant in Faribault. He moved his family from Dundas to Madelia in 1963, and began running the Breckenridge Garage business, which later on included an internal truck dealership until the mid-1990's. He was a member of the American Legion Post 19 in Madelia, as well as the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling to many areas of the United States to attend approximately 20 of his Navy reunions, co-hosting the reunion held in Minneapolis. He enjoyed reading, as well as listening to German polka and country music. William is survived by his wife, LaVonne of Madelia; daughters, Jo Breckenridge, of Mankato, Linda (Ken) Lombardo, of San Jose, CA, Karen (Dan) Gronewold, of Madelia; six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Breckenridge; son, Allan Breckenridge; nephew, Gerald Breckenridge, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
