Willard Schmidt

December 6, 1920 — June 11, 2009

Willard Shorty August Schmidt was born on December 6, 1920 in Sleepy Eye, the son of Fred Lena (Beckman) Schmidt. He grew up and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1938. Shorty served as a mail clerk in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII from September of 1942 until his discharge in February of 1946. He married Elizabeth Betty Breigenzer on June 22, 1950 in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye where Shorty worked at the Sleepy Eye Green House and later for Sleepy Eye Dairy as a milk man before going to work for the Post Office. He worked as a city letter carrier for many years until he retired. He was a member of the St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and was active with the Sleepy Eye Depot Association. He is survived by his sons, Richard (Jean) Schmidt of Eagan, MN and Robert Schmidt of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, two granddaughters, Abby and Emily, brothers, Howard of Arizona, Orville (Phyllis) of Northfield, Paul (Nydia) of Brooklyn Park and sister-in-law, Virginia Youngman of Centuria, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty, brothers, Frederick "Fritz", Ervin Bud (Vita), Raymond Bill, a brother George in infancy, brother-in-law, Fred Fritz Youngman and nephew, Dean Youngman.
