Wayne was born on February 24, 1933, to Frank and Macy (Pond) Smith at their home in Fieldon Township, Minnesota, where Wayne still resided until the time of his death. Wayne was a product of country schooling which he attended near his home through the 8th grade, claiming he walked uphill both ways to school and he really did. After country school, he attended Madelia High School. After school, Wayne found his true calling on the farm. He was a no-nonsense farmer and raised hogs, and cultivated corn and soybeans until his retirement in 2001 when he passed the reins to his sons and continued to “teach” them until the very end. Wayne's journey through life took a detour when he was drafted into the Army for the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 as a gunner.  Before settling down, he enjoyed exploring the vast landscapes of the United States with his buddies, creating memories that would sustain him throughout his life.

On August 24, 1974, Wayne married Elaine (Jaster) Smith in a rural Nicollet County ceremony. They were blessed with two sons, Jason and Jaren Smith. Beyond the fields, Wayne found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. He relished a round of golf, a game of cards, and shooting pool at Wilton’s Palace in Lewisville. As a board member of the Farm Bureau, he brought his practical wisdom to the agricultural community. He was a proud member of the American Legion in Lewisville, MN and of the Presbyterian church. Wayne cherished the camaraderie of fellow farmers, often gathering for coffee to share stories and insights.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Elaine Smith; two sons, Jason (Melissa) and Jaren (Jennifer Coult); and two granddaughters, Jayden and Macy Smith, all of rural Lewisville. Additionally, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Bonnie Jaster of St Peter, Minnesota.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Macy Smith; in-laws, Otto and Helma Jaster; as well as sisters Ruby, Elta, and Leota; brother, Arden; and brother-in-law, Arnold Jaster.
