Virgil Carl Monson, 92, of Saint James, died on April 3, 2025, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Madelia on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 11:00 am., with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Saint James. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
Virgil was born May 10, 1932, at home in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Mons T. and Alvina (Helseth) Monson. He graduated from Rake High School in Iowa in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict but was blessed to never see conflict. On April 28, 1957, Virgil married Sonja Anderson at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minnesota. Together they raised two daughters, Janet and Julie.
Virgil was a faithful believer in God. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Madelia. Virgil and Sonja would attend every Sunday until Sonja was unable to due to health reasons. They then would watch the services on the internet every Sunday.
In 1970, Virgil and Sonja purchased their forever farm near La Salle, Minnesota. He was proud to be the first to own a farm in his family. He and Sonja bred and raised cattle, swine, sheep and chickens. He especially enjoyed raising Arabian horses. Virgil truly enjoyed farm life and has passed that love of farming to his daughters, who continue to this day to care for his horses.
Virgil is survived by his daughters, Janet (Jeff Williams) Monson and Julie Monson; brother-in-law, Karryl (Becky) Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mons and Alvina Monson; wife, Sonja and brother, Merrill (Shirley) Monson.
