Viola 'Vickie' Selland

January 13, 2022 — March 9, 2013

Memorials may be made to: Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer's disease research. Vickie was born in Philadelphia, PA to Austrian immigrants Joseph and Theresa (Lackner) Steiner. Her birthday was on January 13th (in 1920, although she'd have liked no one to know). Seven of her siblings remained in Philly however, Vickie chose a different path and joined the Navy as a WAVE in 1942. It was while stationed in Seattle that she met John E. Selland. They were married at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, on May 16, 1944 during a long furlough. After being blessed with their first son on April 18, 1945 in Seattle, Vickie and John were honorably discharged. They decided to begin farming near Madelia and worked side by side to build their dream. On April 17, 1947 they were blessed with their second son. Although Vickie didn't care for farm chores, she more than made up for that with her wisdom and her guidance in raising her boys who benefited greatly from the life lessons she taught them. Vickie and John gave them the tools necessary to build a life. An excellent cook, Vickie's hot dishes were the first to go at the Sunday Socials she attended. She adored her grandchildren and, along with John, provided many wonderful experiences for them, giving them cherished memories of their time at the farm. A huge Viking fan, Vickie often had a different game plan that she wanted to share with the coaches. Vickie was gracious to everyone as well as a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She is now resting at peace with her husband in heaven, perhaps on their dream plot of land. The family would like to thank all of the dedicated loving staff at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia for treating Vickie with dignity and respect during her stay. Vickie is survived by sons: John J. (Karen Schwenkner) Selland, Elm Grove, WI, and Richard C. Selland, Madelia, former daughter-in-law, Mary (Hruza) Selland, Livingston, MT, dear sister, Alice Williams, New Jersey, grandchildren: Troy (Michelle) Selland, Jennifer (Chris) Scheithauer, Jeffery (Michelle) Selland, and Jessica (Aaron) Dailey, great-grandson, Tucker Emery Scheithauer, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Selland, infant son, Dennis, and siblings: Theresa Tessie, Joe, Julie, Frank, Emma and, Eleanore Steiner.
