Vernelle Caroline Sternberg was born on March 1, 1935 in St. James to parents Walter and Lydia (Niemeier) Sternberg. She grew up in the South Branch area attending St. John's Parochial School and graduated from St. James High School. On December 1, 1956 she was united in marriage to Henry F. Kohn at St. John's in South Branch. Vernelle worked at First National Bank for several years before she and Hank began their family. Vernelle was active in her church first at St. John's then at St. Paul's in St. James, serving in the Ladies Aid, Evening Guild and choir. She also was a member of the VFW Aux. and Legion Aux. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, bowling, traveling, ceramics, water color painting and was a member of two card clubs. Vernelle was also a sports fan. She loved the Twins, Vikings and St. James Saints. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael, in 1997 and her parents. Vernelle is survived by her husband Hank of St. James, daughter and son-in-law Janelle John Munsterman of St. James and their children Erik, Adam and Danielle, a son and daughter-in-law Thomas Sue Kohn of Red Wing and their children Logan Bender and Mary Bender, sisters Luella (Roland) Stradtman of St. James, Marjorie (Carl) Vogt of Truman, Marlys (Kent) Kloepping of Tucson, AZ, sister-in-law Anna Mae King of Waconia, numerous nieces and nephews.
