Verna Mae Johnson

September 8, 1928 — February 27, 2020

Verna Mae Johnson September 8, 1928 - February 27, 2020 There is peace in the promise that life is everlasting. Verna Mae Johnson went home to be with her Savior on February 27, 2020. Verna was born to George and Tina Rempel on September 8, 1928 in Mountain Lake, MN. She was baptized on May 20, 1945 in the First Mennonite Church. She graduated from Mountain Lake High School and went on to study at Bethel College in Newton, KS for two years. On January 19, 1952 she married Leland S. Johnson. Leland and Verna had 47 wonderful years together prior to Leland's passing on June 9, 1999. Verna was treasured and loved not only by her family but also many friends. She deeply enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Verna was an avid quilter. She cherished spending time with fellow quilters, discovering new patterns and colors in fabrics, and making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She blessed each of her children and grandchildren with handmade quilts to hold and cherish now in her absence. Verna had a passion for learning. She loved reading the daily paper, working word puzzles, and wisely used online sources to feed her thirst for learning and expanding her mind. Verna was one of the University of Minnesota Gopher's biggest fans! But her knowledge of college basketball did not end there . . . . . . she followed and was informed about most college basketball teams, their records, and their coaches. Verna loved listening to Christian music sung in harmony with one of her recent favorites being "O Beautiful Star of Bethlehem". Not only did Verna exercise her mind, but she also loved to participate in any form of stretching and exercise group. Verna was an amazing mom, grandma, and great grandma! There are memories of planting gardens, many, many bingo games with exciting prizes, creative 4-H projects, learning to make zwieback, a multitude of craft projects, homemade cinnamon rolls, and grandma supervising while grandchildren got a ride on the old John Deere tractor with grandpa. Verna found solace in the following verse: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31. And one of her favorite songs declares: "Great is Thy Faithfulness. Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy Faithfulness Lord unto me." Verna was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Leland; and one infant sister, Gladys. She is survived by her sister Elfreida DeLany (Royal); one sister-in-law, Irene Loewen; five children: Barb Quiring (Jim), Larry Johnson (Gemma), Susan Lucht (Michael), Doug Johnson, and Diane Ling (Scott); eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Verna was loved deeply and is greatly missed by her family and friends. The family wants to share their heartfelt gratitude with the staff at The Lodge and Good Samaritan Society who provided compassionate and loving care to our mom during her life there. The family is planning a celebration of life service in the spring or early summer.
