After battling Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia for over 8 years, Todd Richard Simpson, 68 of Madelia, left us on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 7:00 a.m.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00-5:00pm, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the American Legion in Madelia. In lieu of flowers/plants please make a donation to the splash pad in Madelia, the Faith Lutheran Church in Madelia, or the Watonwan County Humane Society. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Madelia. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
Todd was born on September 14, 1957, at the Madelia Hospital to Dick and Nylene Simpson. He attended Madelia Elementary and graduated from Madelia High School in 1975. He attended Mankato Technical College and graduated with a degree in Sales and Marketing.
He worked briefly for New Ulm furniture before returning to work with his dad at the Coast to Coast Store. Todd was part of Main St. for 45 years. First working alongside his dad and then purchasing the business in 1999 when his dad retired. Nothing gave Todd greater joy than a conversation behind the counter at the store, a good joke, and the kids who wanted to go to “Todd's” store. In 2019, Todd sold the store due to his illness.
Who Was Todd: He was a son and brother. His mom always said he had one foot out the door. There was fun to be had, bikes to ride, and friends to play with. He was a husband. Todd married Deb (Hruby) on October 16, 1982. They celebrated 43 years together. They enjoyed vacations in Okoboji, outings with friends, a slow cruise on a warm summer day, and of course, eating out. He was a dad. He had two daughters, Heather and Haley. Heather was his “princess" and Haley was his “squirt”. He was so proud of their milestones, accomplishments, and the beautiful women they are. He was a father-in-law to Jeremy (Nase), and a Papa to Dakota and Kinsley. Todd had a way with little kids, which was evident in the way he loved his grandkids. He was a brother-in-law and uncle. Todd always laughed at how many Hrubys could be in one room talking and yet nobody was listening. He was a friend. He looked forward to his drives with his good friend Earl and a cold beer with John. And check with Brenda on the “talent” Todd had in high school.
Todd is survived by his mother, Nylene; his wife, Deb; daughters, Heather (Jeremy) and Haley (fiancée Elizabeth); grandchildren, Dakota and Kinsley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ron and his father, Dick.
Todd will be remembered for his big laugh, service to his community, and love for his family. His family takes peace in knowing he is reunited with his purple convertible, the sun on his face, his favorite pair of sunglasses, and the open road ahead of him.
