Terry Edward Carter, age 71, of St. James, Minnesota, unexpectedly passed away on January 29 leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that will never be forgotten by many. Terry (known affectionately by his grandkids as Papa) was born on July 2, 1954 in Trimont, Minnesota and from the very beginning he was a force full of laughter, determination, and an unmistakable spark that drew people to him. He had a way of lighting up a room, whether through his "peanut" smile, his genuine interest in everyone he met, or one of his legendary stories often told with a bit of creative flair despite the facts. Right out of high school, Terry married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Vickie, in 1972 in Gibbon, Minnesota. Their bond was extraordinary, deep, and inseparable. On a trip to Las Vegas many years ago, Terry got a lightning bolt tattoo and Vickie a ladybug, and from then on they were lovingly called Lightning and Ladybug, a perfect reflection of their fun-loving spirits and enduring partnership. Terry spent his career working for the railroad as a conductor beginning at just 18 years old and continuing until retirement. He was incredibly proud of his work, the life he built for his family, and the many friendships he formed along the way. Family was everything to Terry. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, whether that meant fishing, futzing around the house (because sitting still was never his strong suit), enjoying a special meal, or simply just hanging out together. He had a passion for collecting Hot Wheels cars, always wore a different baseball hat, and was rarely far from his beloved recliner. In his younger years, Terry was part of the Country Youngins' band, and one of their songs "Little Red Rented Row Boat" remains part of family legend, like so many of his stories.
Terry is survived by his loving wife, Vickie; his children, Jeremy Carter (Sheila) and their children Austin and Emma; Jessica Kolb (Jason) and their children Grace (Trey), Ella, and Lily; and Joshua Carter (Sarah) and their children Elvis and Atlas. He is also survived by his mother, Lenora of St. James; his sister-in-law, Kim Kelm (Ron), his sister, Julia; and his brother, Cory. Terry will be incredibly missed. He was truly one-of-a-kind, a man with a giant heart, endless empathy, and a rare ability to make everyone feel special. His humor, kindness, and love will live on in all those who were fortunate to have known him.
