Terence Stone, age 78, of Madelia, died on Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Monday, December 31, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia with Fr. Thien Nguyen as celebrant. Visitation will be 4pm to 8pm, Sunday, at Sturm Funeral Home, Pilgrim Chapel in Madelia, with a 7pm Rosary scheduled. Burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Madelia. Terence Frederick Stone was born on January 16, 1934 to Ivan and Esther (Heagle) Stone on the home farm near Hanska, MN. He graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville, MN in 1951. Terry served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, then finished his education at the University of Minnesota earning a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education. Terry married the love of his life Colette Carrell on September 15th, 1956. They raised 9 children. After teaching one year in Little Falls, he worked for the State of Minnesota as a poultry inspector. He worked for the Peavey Company as a regional poultry supervisor and feed salesman. Following this he became a partner with his father in Stone Brothers Hatchery. The hatchery closed in 1976. He became the Director of the Region 9 Development Commission for 20 years. Terry was always interested in politics and he served as the Mayor of Madelia for 16 years. Terry was president of NADO (National Association of Development Organizations) 1989-1990. He was the recipient of the NADO J.Roy Fogle Award as the Outstanding Executive Director of a Multi-County Planning and Development Organization. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Sons of Norway, VFW and American Legion. Terry traveled to Mexico five times with VOSH (Volunteer Optometrists Serving Humanity) to distribute glasses to the underprivileged. He served on various boards and was active in diversity issues. He loved to travel, read, and enjoyed his chicken collection.
