Sylvester Joseph Weiss

Sylvester Weiss, age 95, of St. James died on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James. Burial will military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be at the churc on Saturday beginning at 9:30am. Sylvester Joseph Weiss was born on October 23, 1921 in Sleepy Eye, MN, the son of Lawrence & Annie (Saffert) Weiss. He attended country school through the 8th grade, worked as a farm hand for various farmers and worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye. He served in the US Army for 21 months in the Aleutian Islands. Sylvester worked at Tony Downs in St. James for 25 years, retiring in 1986. In his retirement years he enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, puzzles and going up North. He was a life member of the VFW and member of the American Legion for 54 years. Sylvester and Leora Clausen made their home together in St. James for many years. He is survived by his sisters, Lillian Riebel of Sleepy Eye, Margaret McSherry of Florida, Mary Doyle of Sleepy Eye, Florence Current of Florida and sister-in-law, Karen Weiss of Sleepy Eye. He is also survived by Leora's family, her daughter, Darla & husband Gerald Kriesch & their 3 children, her son, Lynn & wife Sandi Clausen & their 3 children, her son, Kelly & wife Trudy Clausen & their 3 children, her daughter-in-law, Connie Clausen & her 2 children, Mark Clausen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Linus and Victor, sister, Viola Kruger and significant other, Leora in 2000. He was also preceded in death by Leora's son, Lyle, daughter, Mary Olson and daughter in infancy, LaVee.
