Sylvan Joseph Schumacher was born on the family farm in Brown County, MN on May 10, 1934 to Benjamin and Frances (Poss) Schumacher, the fourth of 8 children. He attended country school near Leavenworth through the eighth grade, then worked on the family farm. He enlisted in the National Guard and served six years. Sylvan married Donna Marie Dietz on August 1, 1961 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Together they raised seven children, 6 girls and 1 boy, on the farm he bought in 1959. Sylvan retired from farming in 1997, which gave him more time to pursue his many interests and hobbies, including woodworking, gardening, golf, playing cards, fishing, bowling and traveling. He served on the Japanese Martyrs Cemetery Board, Farm Board and Parish Council and was on the Leavenworth Township Board for more than 37 years. He was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Sleepy Eye Honor Guard, American Legion, Catholic Aid and Knights of Columbus. Sylvan was full of ideas whether it was building a dugout, a log cabin or a slide-for-life, taking friends on driving tours, researching local history or starting the annual Widow's Valentine's Day Dinner. Throughout his life, Sylvan was a loyal son, caring brother, devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Donna, children, Mary Kay (Bob) Morris, Annette (Brian) Muckenhirn, Janet (Jon) DeRosier, Robert (Carolyn) Schumacher, Connie Schumacher, Judy (Tim) Solyntjes, Linda (Lorrin) Beecher, grandchildren, Ben (Nicole) Morris, Alex (Megan) Morris, Philip (Kelsey) Morris, Daniel (fiancé Sarah Nelson) Morris, Julia, Matthew, Megan, Emmett Muckenhirn, Andrew Tschumper, Caleb, Nathan, Lauren, Eli DeRosier, Silvia and Harriet Schumacher, Lucas Pietan, Isabelle Solyntjes, Olivia and Gabi Beecher, great grandchildren, Henry and Garrett Morris. He is also survived by, siblings, Clifford (Bernette) Schumacher, Bernard (Kathy) Schumacher, Susan (Jeff) Pelzel and sisters-in-law, Carol Schumacher, Margarite Schumacher, Lenora Schumacher, Georgeen Dietz and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Isaac Morris, sister, Doris Johnson, brothers, Robert, Marvin, Jack and Eugene.
