Sue Smith Nelson was born September 11, 1935, in Madisonville, KY the daughter of William Hobart and Willie Florence (Bennett) Smith. Sue graduated from high school and attended Sheriff's training before becoming the first female Deputy Sheriff of Warren County in Kentucky. She later served as Deputy Sheriff in Broward County, FL. Sue then became a journalist for several publications including The Tennessean and Fort Pierce Tribune. She was united in marriage to Delmar Nelson on November 25, 1995, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield. Sue enjoyed reading and her monthly book reviews for the Springfield Advance-Press. She also enjoyed visiting with friends, golf, and traveling to historic sites. Sue was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in New Ulm. Sue Nelson died Monday, January 10, 2011, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato at the age of 75 years. She is survived by husband Delmar of Springfield; daughters- Elaine (Patrick) Diener of Louisville, KY, Linda Fischer of Springfield, and Cheri (Dean) Brown of Evansville, IN; sons- Kent and Tim Dillingham of Evansville, IN; 9 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughters- Karen in 1969, and Rita Fae in 2005.
