Shirley May (Grundmeier) Janzen was born on April 25, 1922 in Mankato, MN to the late Henry and Edna (Christenson) Grundmeier. She graduated from Comfrey High School in 1939. After high school, she attended Mankato Beauty School, graduating in 1940. Shirley was united in marriage to George H. Janzen on July 14, 1940, at the 1st Presbyterian Parsonage in Mountain Lake. Shirley and George lived in Mountain Lake all of their lives, and Shirley's love was to care for, and cook and bake for her family. She worked as a waitress at the Corner Cafe, in the hospital kitchen, and as a cook for Senior Dining and the Mountain Lake Golf Course. Shirley moved to the Laker Apartments in April 2005. In May 2006, she suffered a broken hip and lived in the Good Samaritan for three months. She was able to return to the Laker Apartments until November 30, 2009 when her failing health required her to move back to the Good Samaritan. She was taken to the Windom Area Hospital on December 24, 2009 and passed away on December 31, 2009. Shirley's interests included spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. She loved to socialize and play cards (she was a charter member of the 15 Club). Shirley was a charter member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Mountain Lake and served as an elder, taught Sunday School, and was a member of Presbyterian Women. She loved to travel and go out to eat. Baking pies and zwieback was her specialty. Survivors include one son, Paul Janzen of Wabasha, MN; two daughters, Donna Lindstrom of Mounds View, MN and Jean and her husband Jerry Haberman of Mountain Lake; five grandchildren, Nicole (Tim) Lindstrom, Andrea (Chris) Lindstrom, Shannon Haberman, Jared (Jill) Brandt and Mike Haberman; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Janet Janzen of Mountain Lake; other family and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband George on August 16, 1989, and her parents. Her children will remember her for her wonderful sense of humor, friendship and guidance
