Shirley Hawkes

Shirley (Rasmussen) Hawkes, daughter of Bendix and Ella (Olson) Rasmussen, was born October 10, 1927 in Madelia, MN. Shirley passed away on Nov 24, 2018, in Madelia. She was 91 years old. Shirley was born and grew up in Madelia, graduating from Madelia High School in 1944. Shirley attended Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN graduating in 1948. Shirley married Samuel Hawkes on February 22, 1950 in Minneapolis, where they lived for a year and then spent two years living in New Ulm before returning to Madelia where they would spend most of the next 65 years. She was a very active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia. She was also involved with the Lutheran Youth Group, Circle, Madelia ALCW and Cub Scouts. Shirley enjoyed camping, line dancing, bowling, sewing, playing music, singing, painting, quilting and many different crafts. She spent many winters in Arizona with Sam, where they spent their time golfing, riding motorcycle, crafting, and volunteering. Shirley loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her many talents, her great faith and her kindness. She never had an unkind word for anyone. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law. Shirley is survived by 3 sons, Thomas (Vicki ) Hawkes of Lewisville, MN and their children, Jonathon Hawkes, Christopher (Monica) Hawkes, Nathaniel Hawkes; Daniel (Ann) Hawkes of Madelia, MN and their children Ben (Jessi) Hawkes, Sarah (Michael) Ludens; Timothy (Kiri) Hawkes of Centerville, MN and their children Alyssa (Peter) Postma, Adam Hawkes and Noah Hawkes; 11 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law Connie Wencl, Cyndi Hawkes, Sandi Hawkes and Chuck Hawkes. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband Sam; son David; sisters-in-law Caroline Kastner and Alice Dodge.
