Shirley Haler

Shirley Haler, age 78, of St. James, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health Services- St. James. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Monday, April 16, 2012, at St. James Catholic Church in St. James with Fr. Thien Nguyen as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be Sunday from 4pm to 6pm at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and one hour before services at the church on Monday. Shirley Jean Hovdet was born September 21, 1933 at Mt. Lake, MN, the daughter of Arnold and Emelia (Kjobstad) Hovdet. Shirley grew up in the Butterfield/Odin area. She graduated from the Springfield High School in 1951. She moved to California where she lived for a couple years. On November 27, 1954, she married LaVerne Haler in St. James. The couple made their home in Grogan before moving to their farm near St. James where Shirley continued to live until her death. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, enjoyed playing bingo in area communities and visiting Jackpot Junction. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Shirley is survived by her sons; Brian (Maritess) Haler of Lewisville, Blair (Kathy) Haler of St. James, Gary Haler of St. James, grandchildren; Jeremy Haler, Kira (Seth) Winter, Micah Haler, Stefanie (Jon) Rath, Trisha Haler, Lyndsey Haler, great-grandchildren; Aidan and Austin Rath, brother; James (Iona) Hovdet of Butterfield, sisters-in-law; Elsie Haler of Grogan, Diane Hovdet of Truman, an aunt; Hilda Anderson of Springfield, several nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband LaVerne, brother Lester Hovdet, sister Emily Whitehead, sisters-in-law Bernice Harbitz, Helen Haler and brothers-in-law Bill Whitehead Mike Haler.
