Sam Vanderwerf

Sam Vanderwerf was born August 24, 1911, in Pleasantville, IA the son of Pete and Anna (Hayenga) Vanderwerf. When the family moved to Springfield, Sam enjoyed helping out on the family farm with his five sisters and six brothers. Sam worked as a commercial and residential painter for over 40 years. He served with the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 and saw action in North Africa and Italy. Sam was united in marriage to Gertrude (Schenk) Jahn on June 19, 1959. He enjoyed being a family man and his family dearly remembers him as good step-father, a good husband, and a good grandfather. He will be sorely missed by all. Sam Vanderwerf died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 101 years. He is survived by step-daughter Barbara Fonken of Rochester; step-son Bruce Jahn of Cloquet; and granddaughter Susan Sim of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude; step-son Donald Jahn; daughter-in-law Darlene Jahn; six brothers and four sisters.
