Rosella “Sally” Isabel Helget was born May 3, 1937, to Florentine and Helen (Hornick) Mathiowetz in Sleepy Eye, MN. She attended country school for 8 years then graduated high school from Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in 1955. After graduation, she was employed at Tessien Hospital in Springfield, Loretta Hospital and Benson Optical in New Ulm.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth Helget on May 19, 1959, at the Japanese Martyrs Church in Leavenworth. They were blessed with 6 children. They farmed in Burnstown Township until retiring to Springfield in 2009. While still living on the farm and all of the children were in school, Sally was employed in the dietary department for St. John Lutheran Home and also worked as a housekeeper. On the farm, she helped with farm chores, raised and butchered roosters, had a large garden, and loved her flowers.
Sally was an excellent cook and baker, including liver and onions, German potato salad, sauerkraut and dumplings, as well as many new recipes. Everyone’s favorite was her banana bars and banana bread. It was rare for anyone to leave her house empty-handed.
Ken and Sally loved old-time music and attending dances. They enjoyed their vacations to Las Vegas and Branson. Sally treasured being able to attend or listen to her grandchildren’s activities.
She is survived by her children - Deb (Mike) Windschitl, Diane (Jeff) Kretsch, Tammy (Corey) Schewe, Scott Helget, Paula (Randy) Sturm; son-in-law Mike Hayden; grandchildren - Katie (Mark) Lax, Sarah (Mike) Ulrich, Amber (Luke) Vogel, Christopher (Joeli) Kretsch, Megan (Brandon Halverson) Jensen, Jocy (Chris) Wersal, Heather (Brent) Haala, Casie (Tom) Braulick, Colton (Chelsey) Schewe, Brody, Brooklyn, and Brayden Sturm; 22 great grandchildren; siblings – Carol Wendland and Donald (Marilyn) Mathiowetz; brothers and sisters-in-law - Lois Schley, Margie (Randi) Martinson and Kevin (Sue) Helget.
