Ruth Gilland

September 25, 1906 — May 25, 2006

The daughter of George Gilland and Anna Margaret Knudsen Gilland, she was born September 25, 1906, in Brookville Township, Redwood County, Minn. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school, Dist. 34. In 1922 she moved with her family to Sleepy Eye, Minn. After High School at Sleepy Eye, she attended Normal Training for one year and was qualified to teach in Minn. rural schools. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Mankato State College, Minn. and later her master's degree from the University of Iowa. She taught in eight different towns and cities in Minn., retiring after 44 years. She lived in Boulder from 1996 to 2006, most recently at Fraiser Manor Health Care center. She was a member of Union Congregational Church, St. Louis Park, Minn., and the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society. She enjoyed birds, poetry, Bible study, playing cards, and travel to various parts of the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. She is survived by her sister, Alice Hobson of Boulder, CO and 14 nieces and 6 nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters: Ann McRae, Henrietta Albrecht, Florence Aitchison, Mabel Anderson, and brothers: James, Frank, Charles and Willard Gilland.
