Russell Rempel was born November 18, 1917 in Butterfield, the son of John and Helen (Funk) Rempel. He attended and graduated from Butterfield High School in 1935. He enlisted in the US Army and served in Africa and Italy. He was united in marriage to Adeline Holte on February 10, 1973 at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James. Russell retired from the Railroad in 1977 after 37 years. The couple returned to St. James in 1989. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting. Russell was a member of the Legion, VFW, Eagles and Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James and a former member of the Moose, Elks, and Mason. Russell died on Friday, March 10, 2006 at the Pleasant View Good Samaritan Care Center in St. James, MN. He is survived by his wife - Adeline Rempel of St. James; step children - Jayne Anderson of St. James, Charles and wife Pat Holte of Colorado Springs, CO, and Douglas and wife Kathy Holte of Deerwood, MN; a niece - Debra and husband Norvin Brown of Sioux Falls, SD; 4 step grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Norma Rempel of Windom. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother John K. Rempel.
