Richard Torkelson

Richard 'Dick' Hanson Torkelson, Sr. was born November 14, 1925 in Highwater Township, Cottonwood County to Torkel and Tillie (Hanson) Torkelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Highwater Lutheran Church and attended school in District 3, Cottonwood County. Dick was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1950 and served during the Korean War with Bravo Company 151st Engineer Combat BN. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and received the Bronze Star. Dick was united in marriage to Ardys Holmes on February 3, 1953 in Redwood Falls, MN. He held farm jobs for many years until 1967 when he started working at the Lamberton Public School until his retirement in 1987. Dick has spent the last 48 years in Lamberton and was blessed with 7 wonderful children, 18 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Andrew Peterson American Legion Post #41. Dick enjoyed reading, playing cards, camping, and the annual Torkelson family reunions. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, music and chording on the piano and guitar. Richard 'Dick' Torkelson, Sr. died Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at his home. He is survived by children- Richard, Jr. and wife Betty Torkelson of Windom, David and wife Kim Torkelson of Ramsey, Robert and wife Pam Torkelson of Crookston, Marilyn and husband Steven Straumann of Hutchinson, John and wife Bonnie Torkelson of Goose Creek, SC, Carolyn Torkelson of St.James, MN, and Jan and husband Mark Benedict of Lamberton; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ardys in 2008; baby granddaughter Torkelson; grandson Joshua Torkelson; and sisters- Beulah Matzke, Doris Torkelson, and Alpha Erickson.
