Richard "Dick" William Simpson was born March 26, 1933, to Harold and Evelyn (Schwingler) Simpson in Edgerton, WI. He graduated from Foley High School in 1951. On April 30, 1955, he married Nylene Jahnz at the United Methodist Church in Madelia. It was in Madelia that they raised their two sons, Ron and Todd.
In 1952 Dick started working at Soreide Pontiac and later at Hayden Furniture in sales. In 1963 he worked as a bulk oil distributer for City Service until 1971 when he owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Madelia. Dick was the owner and operator of the store until his retirement in 1999 when he proudly sold the store to his son, Todd. Dick also helped at funeral home as an assistant for 35 years.
Dick volunteered in the Madelia community in many capacities over the years. He served on the Light Plant board for 15 years, a charter member ambulance squad for 8 years, was an outstanding JC member and JC president, and on the Madelia Fire Department for 23 years.
In his free time, he loved to go fishing and hunting. He enjoyed taking many camping trips with family and friends. A highlight for Dick was a 2 month trip to Alaska with Nylene and their pick up camper. He enjoyed being in the outdoors and even while at home spent a great deal of time outside meticulously caring for his lawn. Dick met each person with a friendly smile and good conversation. He loved children, and was always ready with a pocketful of quarters to hand out.
Dick will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Dick is survived by his wife of 70 years, Nylene Simpson; son Todd (Debrah) Simpson; granddaughters, Heather (Jeremy) Nase, Haley Simpson and great-grandchildren, Dakota and Kinsley Nase. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Evelyn Simpson; sisters, Lois (Ray) Beving, Maxine (Donald) Bettondorf, Patricia Schmidtke, and his son, Ronald Clark Simpson in 2015.
