Richard was born on November 24, 1942, in Madelia, Minnesota, and raised by his parents, Lloyd and Leona (Becker) Sill. During high school he excelled in football, track, and wrestling, earning a trip to the state wrestling tournament at a time when Minnesota had only one state class.

He served from 1963 to 1966 spending most of his time in Germany where he worked as a heavy truck mechanic and eventually rose to the rank of Specialist Fifth Class.
Following his military service, Richard returned home and married Lorraine Sorenson, on August 27, 1966. Together they were blessed with two children, Mark and Brenda, whom they adored. Additionally, Richard's grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart. He loved attending their many activities and was grateful they lived nearby, allowing him to visit, joke, and spend time with them often.
Always willing to serve his community, Richard dedicated 40 years as Fieldon Township Treasurer. He was also a member of Madelia Baptist Church, serving faithfully as both a Deacon and church treasurer for many years.
While farming was his lifelong profession and passion, he was also known for being kind, friendly, and hardworking. He enjoyed visiting with people everywhere he went.
Richard is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his children, Mark (Amanda) Sill, Brenda (Glen) Christensen; grandchildren, Mariella Sill, Jacob Sill, Lauren Sill, Emma Christensen, Ethan Christensen; brother, Jerry; his twin sister, Cathy Tostenson, and sister, Sue (Ron) Halvorson.
