Richard Warren 'Dick' Sater, Sr. was born September 30, 1933, in Springfield to John and Selma (Nygaard) Sater. At the young age of 6, he started his first job selling newspapers on the street corner in Springfield. Soon after, he worked as a pin setter at the Springfield Bowling Alley. In his teenage years, with wooden blocks on the pedals so he could reach them, he began his truck driving career working with Ray Heinen of Springfield, transporting anything from fresh produce to Christmas trees. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1951 and served with the U.S. Navy from 1951-54 aboard the USS Kearsage. After an honorable discharge, he returned to work for Ray Heinen where he met, and was later united in marriage, to Edna Radke of Walnut Grove in 1957. Together they raised 4 children in the Minneapolis, Springfield, and Echo areas. They divorced in 1981. He later married Charlotte Sherman of Balaton in 1983. They lived together in their home across from Lake Yankton in Balaton until divorcing in 2001. During his many years of trucking he worked for various companies, logging millions of accident-free miles until retiring from Viessman Trucking of Marshall in 1995. Dick enjoyed pheasant hunting with his father, bowling, and tinkering with old cars. He loved spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Springfield American Legion and St. John Lutheran Church.
