Richard was born on September 19, 1937, at the Mountain Lake hospital. His parents were Henry and Tina (Warkentin) Krahn. At about the age of 2 his father passed away. His mother remarried John Vogt, who helped raise and support the family until he passed away when Richard was 14.
Richard attended school in the Windom district, graduating from Windom High School in 1956.
Richard accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and was baptized at the Evangelical Free Church in Windom. After marrying Linda Wall on October 25, 1963, he transferred his membership to the Immanuel Mennonite church in Delft, Minnesota.
Richard started his grocery business career at an early age by fetching items for his mother at the age of 10 with his coaster wagon. He started working at the K & K store in Windom at the age of 14 and then transferred to working at the Fair Store in Windom for about six years. During this time he served in the National Guard, starting shortly after graduation from high school and eventually earning an Honorable Discharge in September 1963.
Around 1963 Richard began working for Walt Franz, owner of the Franz Fairway Store in Mountain Lake, as the grocery manager. He later went into partnership with Senator Franz around 1969. When the Mountain Lake Mall was built in fall 1979, Rich bought the store outright, renaming it Rich's Foods. Rich owned and operated the store until fall 1999, when he sold it and retired.
Rich loved being a dad to his two children, Mary and David. After retiring, he spent time with his wife gardening and working at home and at their church.
Rich is survived by his daughter, Mary and husband, Dick Carpenter of Peyton, Colorado; son, David Krahn of Mountain Lake; and his sister, Deloris (Marvin) Regehr of Mountain Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; his wife, Linda; brother, Arnold Krahn; sister, Rosella Friesen; and half-brother, Willard Vogt.
Richard requested that memorial gifts be given to the Lakeview Gospel Church or the Gideon's International.
