Rev. Eugene Conrad Hackert

Reverend Eugene Hackert Fr. Eugene Hackert, 94, was called from this life on March 2, 2021 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Eugene Conrad Hackert was born in Madison, Minnesota on February 15, 1927 to Conrad and Josephine (Bublitz) Hackert, growing up with his only brother, Virgil, in rural Bellingham, Minnesota on his family's farm until attending high school at Nazareth Hall in St. Paul, Minnesota and the St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul. On June 2, 1951, he was ordained a priest at the St. Paul Cathedral in St. Paul, Minnesota by Bishop James Byrne for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, serving at St. Agnes Church in St. Paul. On June 9, 1958, Fr. Hackert became a priest of the newly created Diocese of New Ulm, after which he served at the churches of the Holy Redeemer in Marshall, Holy Trinity in Winsted, St. Gregory the Great in Lafayette, St. Clara in St. Clara, Immaculate Conception in St. Peter, St. Mary's in Tracy, St. Paul's in Walnut Grove, St. Joseph in Clements, St. Michael's in Morgan, St. Mathias in Wanda, and St. Willibrord in Gibbon. Fr. Hackert retired from active priestly ministry in 2001, living in rural New Ulm until 2011 when he moved to Lake Villa Maria Apartments in Sleepy Eye, and finally into Divine Providence Community Home. Fr. Hackert had many interests including local history and genealogy, photography, hunting and traveling. He was involved in the Way of the Cross in New Ulm as well as the Father Alexander Berghold Committee in New Ulm. He was proud of being born in "the year that Lindberg crossed the Atlantic" as well as that his father was the last farmer in Lac qui Parle County who still plowed with a horse. May he rest in peace.
