Peter Loewen

Peter N. Loewen, son of Henry F. and Katherine Niessen Loewen was born on June 8, 1916, in Mountain Lake Township, Cottonwood County, MN. Peter was baptized upon confession of his faith and received into membership of the First Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake on May 31, 1936 by Rev. I. J. Dick, where he remained a life time member. He was active in Christian Endeavor Society and Superintendent of the Junior Sunday School Dept. for many years. He also taught grade 4, Junior High and Adult SundaySchool Classes. Peter was united in marriage to Elizabeth Elrose Penner on June 19, 1941. After their marriage they started farming north of Butterfield, MN. In 1952 they purchased a farm northwest of Mountain Lake, by Eagle Lake, where they farmed until they retired in 1985, when they moved into Mountain Lake. He received his education in Country School Districts #12 and #27 in Cottonwood Co. and Comfrey Public School. Peter and his wife Elizabeth enjoyed farming, raising and exhibiting registeredGuernseys as a family project. In 1990 Peter and Elizabeth were awarded the outstanding Senior Breeders Award by the Minnesota Guernsey Ass'n. They were 4-H Club leaders for Carson Climbers. Peter was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed High School sports. He enjoyed harvest-time and excelled in hand corn husking contests. He also enjoyed visiting the sick and shut-ins, sharing and praying with them. He often played his harmonica for the sick and shut-ins, in church services and in the community.During his youth he enjoyed singing in the church choir and in small groups. Peter N. Loewen, age 88, of Mountain Lake, MN, died on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake. Peter is survived by his wife Elizabeth E. Loewen of Mountain Lake; a son, David Peter Loewen and wife JoAnn of Farmington, MI; 3 daughters, LaDonna Marie Stout and husband Richard of Butterfield, MN, Loretta Jane Gorman and husband Frank of Grand Rapids, MI, and Marjorie Elaine Rasmussen and husband Charles of Glendale, AZ; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Marie Loewen, Tina Menken and Betty Nelson; and 5brothers, Henry, Frank, John, Jacob and Nick Loewen.
