Pauline Schackel

March 8, 1926 — July 22, 2013

Pauline Schackel, 87, of Evan, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013 at the Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Pauline was born March 8, 1926 in Evan, the youngest of six children, to Lars Paulsen and Kirsten (Ostergaard) Paulsen. She was baptized and confirmed at St Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School. Pauline married George F. Schackel on April 2, 1945 in Minneapolis, and their son George P. was born April 11, 1946. Pauline and George lived primarily in Alexandria and operated a store, farm and then summer resort. Following George's death in 1954 Pauline continued in the resort business and then for several years as a 'house mother' in a group home for troubled teens and a home for individuals with special needs. She moved back to Evan twenty years ago and lived just a block from the house in which she was born. In addition to her husband George, Pauline is predeceased by siblings Paul Paulsen, Anna Petermann, Christian Paulsen, Nels (Clifford) Paulsen and Marie Pinneo. She is survived by her son George Schackel and wife Margaret Clark of Travelers Rest, SC and numerous adored nieces and nephews and their extended families in Minnesota, Michigan and elsewhere - and 'adopted' granddaughter Cori Deming. Always an independent person, Pauline found wonderful care and support from many loving friends, family and neighbors - as well as the caring staffs of the Sleepy Eye Medical Center and Divine Providence Community Home. Pauline loved to travel, often taking her sister Anna along on her journeys. She always carried a sense of humor and whimsy with her as she traveled through life. She will be interred at Prairieville Cemetery northeast of Evan beneath her chosen headstone inscribed "My Last Trip". First Visitation 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Friday, July 26, 2013 Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye Chapel 301 - 3rd Ave. S.W. Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, United States 56085
