Norman William Engelbrecht was born in St. James on April 7, 1929, the son of Fred and Alice (Runge) Engelbrecht. Norman attended country school District 51, which was located next to the family farm, for eight years and then graduated from St. James High School in 1947. While attending the University of Minnesota, School of Agriculture and Home Economics, he met Cynthia Hughes of Le Sueur. The couple married on September 21, 1952 at the Presbyterian Church in Le Sueur. Norman served in the US Army from 1953-1955, much of that time he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage, Alaska. Following his discharge, the couple returned to his parents farm in Rosendale Township and farmed until their retirement. Norman liked to have livestock of several kinds, dairy cows, hogs and feeder cattle on the farm for many years. He took pride in their farm and tried to keep it neat and attractive. When Norman was younger, he enjoyed music, singing in high school & church choir, he also played the trombone in high school band, 4H band, Ag school and City band. He was active in church and community, and served on several boards of directors. He was a member of the Minnesota Southwest Farm Management Assoc. for 40 years. Norman and Cynthia enjoyed traveling and went on several bus tours after their retirement. They enjoyed attending local plays and concerts. Norman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cynthia of St. James, children, Bonnie Landwehr of Pleasant Prairie, WI, David (Deborah) Engelbrecht of St. James, grandchildren, Jaden Landwehr and Derek Landwehr, Shaun Shellum, Preston Anderson, Kasey (Luke) Stenzel, great-grandchildren, Kloey, Liam, and Silas Stenzel, Quinn and Roen Anderson. He is also survived by his sister, Mildred Besel and husband Reiny, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
