Norbert Matter

Norbert Earl Matter was born October 4, 1924, in Sundown Township, Redwood County, Minnesota the son of Earl and Alma (Baldus) Matter. He attended School District #13, then St. Raphael's Catholic School which Norbert called The Sister School. He was united in marriage to June Schnobrich on April 4, 1956, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Norbert and June enjoyed polka dancing and working in the garden together. He enjoyed June's home cooked meals and desserts, especially her raisin pie. A lifetime resident of Springfield, Norbert farmed his entire life in Sundown Township where he raised sweet corn and peas for Del Monte, and also raised cattle, pigs, chickens, and numerous other crops. The Matter family farm was named a Century Farm in 2005. Norbert moved to The Maples in December of 2010. He was a lifetime member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters since 1941. Norbert enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, Sequence, and Uno. He also enjoyed polka music, watching 'Band Wagon' and 'Wheel of Fortune', checking crops, and traveling in his later years - especially to Mexico, Florida, and Colorado. Norbert Matter died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 86 years. He is survived by children - Kay and husband Doug Baumann of Onalaska, WI, Fay and husband Bob Claeys of Seffner, FL, Mark Matter and special friend Jody Peterson of Springfield, Paul and wife Sue Matter of Springfield, Amy Matter-Hines and husband Kent Hines of Brainerd, Scott and wife Nancy Matter of Sanborn, Tina Matter and fiance' Mark Cairns of Glenwood, MN, and Jason Matter of Milliken, CO; and grandchildren - Heather and Christopher Claeys, and Sarah, Joshua, Samantha, Emily, and Tori Matter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife June in 2004; grandson Zachary Scott Matter in infancy; brothers- Phillip and Charles; and a brother in infancy.
