Nettie Elizabeth Eytzen was born December 20, 1933 to Peter and Anna Wiens in Hepburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia where they lived for 8 years and then moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia. When Nettie was a young girl she made the decision to follow Jesus Christ. At age 13, she rededicated her life to the Lord. The family lived on a dairy farm and raised strawberries and raspberries. She attended Aldergrove Mennonite Brethren Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir, a trio and taught Sunday School. She had a great love for singing in the church as well as at the bible college she attended for four years.
After seeking God's will with much prayer the door opened for her to go to Akron, Pennsylvania to do voluntary service for Mennonite Central Committee. Her assignment led her to Denver, Colorado where she met her husband Ed Eytzen. They were married in 1957 in British Columbia and then moved to Ed's parents farm near Delft, Minnesota where they lived and farmed for over 20 years. They were blessed with 5 daughters and 1 son.
Nettie enjoyed sewing, crafts, reading and gardening. Most of all, though, she enjoyed being a wife and mother of her 6 children and later grandmother and great grandmother. She was very involved in the Carson Mennonite church where she sang in a ladies sextet for 30 years. She also served in women's ministries, bible studies and mentored young women which was a great encouragement to many. She served alongside her husband with the Gideons ministry for many years. When Ed entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home she was faithful to be by his side every day for over 2 years before the Lord took him home.
The last 3 ½ years, she resided at The Alton Memory Care facility in St. Paul, MN. where she battled with dementia. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a follower of Christ and woman of prayer. Her struggles here on earth are over and she is in the presence of her savior, Jesus Christ.
Nettie is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edwin Eytzen; son, Gordon Eytzen; parents, Peter and Anna Wiens; 1 sister, Mary Theissen; 4 brothers, John, Jake, David and Jack Wiens.
She is survived by daughters, Carol (David) Jahnke of St. Paul, MN, Marlene (Carl) Kuhns of Bennington, NE, Susan (Russ) Rose of Maple Grove, MN, Shirl (Mike) Trowbridge of Barberton, OH, Ginny (Lloyd) Entz of North Platte, NE; 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Gideons International at www.gideons.org or The Gideons International Processing Center, P.O. Box 9725,Washington, DC 20090-7251.
