Mildred Maas

March 10, 1922 — July 13, 2012

Mildred Pauline Christensen Maas was born on March 10, 1922 in Cottage Grove, MN, the daughter of Christen and Tina (Jensen) Christensen. They moved to the Evan area and she attended Morgan schools. She graduated from Normal training in Lamberton, MN. On June 16, 1943 she was married to Gilbert Maas at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan. After marriage they farmed in Milford Township until retirement. Mildred taught several years, worked at Janet's Gift Shop in Sleepy Eye, and then at her daughter's store - String and Things for 22 years until 2001. She was very active in volunteer activities and was a member of the Progressive Homemaker's Extension group, Sleepy Eye American Field Service, the Sleepy Eye Woman's club, Sleepy Eye Historical Society, a 4-H leader for the Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes, and the Red Hat Society. Mildred was very active in her church as the president of the Ladies Aid Society for many years, in the choir, and as MLC contact person for St. John's. She was honored in 2006 for 43 years of service to the American Red Cross as a Blood Bank co-chairman, and was a volunteer driver for Heartland Express. She loved to entertain and served meals to family and friends. She had a green thumb and could coax any seedling to grow and flourish. Her hobbies were many; including crafts, counted cross stitch, music, playing piano and she was very proud of her Danish Heritage. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mildred is survived by her daughters - Jeanne (Ron) Lorensberg of Mankato, LeAnn (Brad) Berkner of Sleepy Eye; sons - Robert (Melissa) Maas of Sleepy Eye and William (Janice) Maas; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; twin brother - Milo (Arlene) Christensen of Morgan; a brother - Chris Chistensen of Morgan; brothers-in-law - Lester (Lois) Maas of Sleepy Eye and Donald Radel of Evan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband - Gilbert in 2007; and a son Brian in infancy.
