Merton Elkins

Merton (Mert) Elkins was born on September 4th, 1938 in Madelia MN to his parents Russel and Leona (Keech) Elkins. Mert graduated from Madelia High School and enlisted in the US Army. After 3 years he was honorably discharged and moved to Minneapolis and began working factory jobs. He spent 27 years working with Flour City Architectural Metals until they closed and relocated to Tennessee. On August 25th, 2000 he married Katherine (Kathy) Cassavant in Minneapolis, MN and they spent 21 years together making wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Kathy will always remember his beautiful blue eyes and that he was a kind and gentle man "who knew what he was getting into when he married her". Those who loved him will think of him fondly when they hear a good joke, something Mert really enjoyed. In 2004 Mert and Kathy returned to his home town of Madelia. Upon his return a classmate told the couple his moving back "completed the puzzle". They were warmly received by the friends and community and that has been a large part of Mert's early years in life. Together the two of them raised chickens and enjoyed life on the farm. Merton is survived by his wife Kathy Elkins; Brother, Ron Elkins; Sister, Jean (Dotta) Cole; Brother in Law, Thomas (Becky) Cassavant; Sisters in Law, Sandi Cassavant and Mary Rose Cassavant; Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and even a few great, great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Russel and Leona Elkins and his sister Bonnie Michels.
