Merlyn "Merk" Yackel was born to Harold and Clarice (Heydlauff) Yackel on April 7, 1924 in Redwood Falls, MN. Merk was baptized May 25, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. He received his education and graduated from the Sanborn High School. Merk served as a cook in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was united in marriage to Wyona "Sis" Aden on June 29, 1947 at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in St. James. After coming home from the service he worked for the Dr. Pepper Company. His love of cooking and baking showed as he enjoyed working for the Schmidt's Bakery as well as cooking at home for his family. Merk also farmed throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling and won many trophies which he proudly displayed, and watching ballgames (especially the Twins). For 19 years Sis and Merk spent their winters in Texas. He was a long time member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in St. James. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion in St. James. Merk is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Wyona "Sis"; daughters, JoAnn (Eldon) Janzen of Butterfield, Carol (Scott) Melick of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jeanna, Chad, Sara, Mandy, Stephanie and Timmy; great-grandchildren, Evan, Dylan, Katelyn, Noah, Lucas, Nicholas, Leta and Doni; brother, Eugene Yackel of Naples, Fl. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry; grandson, Matthew and great-grandson, Jonathan.
