Melford A. 'Jake' 'Mick' Hoffmann was born November 25, 1922 in Sanborn, MN, the son of Albert and Elsie (Heise) Hoffmann. He graduated from Sanborn High School where he was a member of the first 6-man football team Sanborn had. Jake was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater, most notably, the Battle of the Bulge with the 106th. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Mick returned to Sanborn and worked at the elevator and the hatchery. On July 23, 1948 he was united in marriage to Agatha Heinz in Watertown, SD. In 1953 Jake began work as a rural mail carrier and he served in that profession for 40 years! He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church, a member of Colburn American Legion Post #286 for 57 years, the Sanborn Fire Department for over 30 years, the Sanborn School Board from 1963-1982, and the State School Board Association. Mick enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, gardening, playing cards, and loved his family. Melford Arlon Hoffmann died Friday, January 21, 2005 at Valley View Manor in Lamberton at the age of 82 years. Survivors include wife- Agatha of Lamberton; children- Connie Lewis Cotten of Roseville, MN, Dean and wife Jane Hoffmann of Sartell, MN, Gwen and husband Keith Nardinger of Red Wing, MN, Keith and wife Carol Hoffmann of Staples, MN, Jo and husband Jack Reiner of Sanborn, and Angie and husband Tim Walter of Roseville, MN; 18 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters- Mabel Bloemke of Springfield, Dorothy Bittler of Springfield, Delna and husband Arvid Redman of Sanborn, and Elaine Hedman of Lamberton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters- Arliss Hoffmann and Vinetta Weise; and brothers- Warren and Delmer.
