Maynard Lawrence Wendland

Maynard (Mickey) Lawrence Wendland was born September 28, 1926 in Storden, MN, the son of Richard and Ida (Matzke) Wendland. He attended and graduated in 1945 from Lamberton High School. After high school, he traveled to California and worked on A-26 twin engine war planes for the Navy. After returning from California, he worked as a plumber’s apprentice for a period of time, before working in the poultry business. He later purchased the poultry business and traveled the local area picking up and selling eggs. But his lifelong dream was to always be a baseball announcer.

On February 12, 1953, Mickey married Margie Rae Marben in Redwood Falls, MN. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, telling jokes (he’d always laugh before he got to the punchline), and watching the Twins, Gophers, and Vikings. He also enjoyed listening to the old time music on Bandwagon and watching westerns. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family will always remember his “one liners” while playing cards.

Mickey died December 19, 2022 at Valley View Manor at the age of 96 years.

He is survived by daughters Bobbi of Costa Mesa, CA and Robin (Darold) Hulke of Eagan, grandchildren Jennifer (Tom) Wollan, Jessica (Tim) Knutson, four great grandchildren Paige, Ford, Blake and Paul, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margie, son Brooks and brothers Elmer, Erwin, Edwin, Rueben, Leonard (Bud), and Vernon, and sisters Emma Wolf, Elde Wendland, Edna Culbert, Lydia Abbott, and Ione Knoll.
