Funeral services will be 11am, Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James with Rev. Mandy France officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James. Maurine Broste, age 100, died Sunday, November 7 at Mount Olivet Homes in Minneapolis, where she had been living since 2018. She was born to Mabel (Olson) and Bruno H Nelson on August 2, 1921, the oldest of their two children. Her childhood was spent in the farming community north of St James where she attended country school, did her farm chores and played with her friends and cousins. She was baptized and confirmed at East Sveadahl Lutheran Church. The family moved to town in 1939, just before Maurine's graduation from St James High School. There they became members of Augustana Lutheran. Maurine worked at the Uleberg's store, where she packed groceries for delivery and eventually advanced to making buying trips to Minneapolis and St Paul. Maurine married Philip Broste of Hanska in May of 1945. They lived together briefly in Arizona where Philip was stationed and then returned to St James to make their home. Philip died in November of 1994. Being a devoted mother and a conscientious homemaker were her main pursuits, along with various activities in the church. She sang in church choirs for 40 years, attended Bible study and served on the Altar Guild for 50. She supported and encouraged her three children through all their activities, including years as a Cub Scout den mother. In 1963 she returned to the retail world when she began working for JCPenney's in St James. She loved working with the public, was a valued employee and thoroughly enjoyed her "Penney's gang" colleagues. She retired in 1981. After their retirement, Philip and Maurine took several trips together, including a trip to Norway and Sweden to connect with Maurine's cousins there. She remained active in church activities, her Swedish Friends group and her "39er's"classmates well into her 90's. But family remained at the center of her life as she delighted in her children's growing families and the gift of her grandchildren. Maurine moved to Brandt Ridge in 2013 where she lived until moving to Minneapolis to be closer to family in 2018. Dementia and her advanced age led to her passing. Even as her health declined and life became more and more difficult, Maurine retained her sweet spirit, her deep faith and her grateful love of family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Mauritz, her husband Philip and her granddaughter Elizabeth Weaver. She is survived by her children David (Joan) Broste of Littleton, CO; Steven (Cynthia) Broste, Champlin, MN; Susan Weaver (Richard) of Eden Prairie as well as her grandchildren Nicholas Broste, Christopher Broste (special friend Shannon May), Juliana Broste, Rebecca Carlson (Jeromy) and Mark Broste (Kate Mills) and her great-grandchildren Linnea and Britta Carlson.
