Matilda Ewert

June 3, 1918 — December 14, 2004

I was born in Chinook, MT on June 3, 1918. My parents were Adam and Mollie (Schmiess) Feil. I made a personal commitment to God, accepting His gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, during the Dr. R.R. Brown evangelistic meetings in Mountain Lake. That same year, in 1933, I was baptized upon the confession of my faith, and became a member of the Carson Mennonite Brethren Church, in which I actively participated and remained a member. I received my elementary education in Delft, MN, and my four years of High School in the Mountain Lake Public School, graduating in 1936. In the fall of that same year, I attended the last one-year Normal Training Teachers School at Windom, MN, graduating in 1937. I began my nine year rural teaching in the fall of that year, and continued my education by attending Mankato Teachers College during the summers, and by taking off-campus education classes. I also attended Tabor College in Hillsboro, KSfor one year, in 1940-1941, and received credits for the education classes I took toward my teaching degrees, receiving my two year diploma and later my four year Bachelor of Science degree. I taught a total of 17 1/2 years. My last six years of teaching were in the Windom Public School. Previous to this had also taught in Lamberton and Granite Falls, MN. I was married to Henry Ewert on August 23, 1956. Two sons were born to us, Randy and Mark. We lived on the farm Henry purchased the year before our marriage of 28 years. Henry died on October 16, 1984. I continued living on the farm for two more years, and then purchased a house in Mountain Lake, and moved in on September 1, 1986. Matilda's family remembers that she enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening, doing crafts, and painting and drawing. She was excited to have been able to have traveled to Africa to visit Randy and his family while they were in service with Mennonite Central Committee. Matilda (Feil) Ewert, age 86, of Mountain Lake, MN, died on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at the Windom Area Hospital in Windom, MN. Matilda is survived by her two sons, Randy and wife Roxane Ewert of Marcellus, MI, and Mark and wife Barbara Ewert of Fairview, OK; a grandson, Joshua Ewert of Marcellus, MI; a sister, Luella Wiebe of Waseca, MN; a brother, Larry and wife Jetta Feil of Aurora, CO; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Ewert; and a brother, Henry Feil.
