Marynelle Samuelson

May 2, 1935 — July 14, 2013

Marynelle (Ericson) Samuelson was born in Denison, Iowa on May 2, 1935 to Oscar and Judith (Swanson) Ericson. She had four brothers-Melvin, Norris, Curtis, and Clayton. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College (now University of Northern Iowa) and became a kindergarten teacher in Lakeview, Iowa. It was here that Marynelle met and fell in love with a fellow teacher who became her husband, Robert "Sam" Samuelson. Sam and Marynelle moved to Comfrey and the family farm in 1966 with their two children, Sandi and Ted, who were seven and five years old at the time. Peter was born the following year. Marynelle took great pleasure and pride in being a loving wife and mother. She also loved being "Gramma" which she first became in 1993 when Ted and his wife, Karen, had the first of four grandchildren. Ted resides in Flower Mound, Texas, with their two sons, Eric (20) and Brett (17). Pete farmed with Sam until Sam's death in 2002. Pete and his wife, Tammi, live on the family farm, which has been in the family since 1899. They have two sons, Jacob (16) and Eli (12). Sandi and her beau, Steve, live in Tucson, Arizona with Marynelle's grand dog, Louie. Marynelle continued to live on the farm in the home in which she and Sam raised their three children until her death. Although Marynelle's greatest love was Sam, her children, and her grandchildren, she had many other interests, too. Prior to Sam's death, he and Marynelle enjoyed trips to visit their children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed unplanned side trips to explore new places. Marynelle loved peaceful summers relaxing at her cabin on Green Lake in Spicer, Minnesota. She was a voracious reader and always had at least one book going. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She had a passion for politics and loved to stay informed about current events. Her faith was a central part of her life and was evident in her daily actions and how she treated others. Marynelle Samuelson was a loving, dearly sweet, remarkable, impish, smart and tough wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose legacy will be her extraordinary family.
