As a young child, Mary and her family moved to Mountain Lake and then to the Redwood Falls area. She graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1962. On August 10, 1963, Mary married the love of her life, Leon Peterson. They were blessed with three children, Janelle, Lisa, and Randy. Mary worked side by side with Leon on their farm while raising their family. Mary also found time to work at the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm. In retirement, Mary and Leon moved to New Ulm six years ago.

She was also involved with Via de Cristo and MN Wings motorcycle events with Leon. She will be remembered for the beautiful quilts she created. She also enjoyed her roses, was a 4-H member and leader, and will be remembered for all the goodies she loved baking, especially her Rice Krispie bars.
