Mary A. Peterson, age 81, of New Ulm, Minnesota, formerly of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota died on September 5, 2025. Visitation will be Friday, September 12, 2025, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Evan, with visitation 1 hour prior, with Pastor Becca Krogstad officiating. Interment will be at Brookville Dannebod Cemetery in rural Springfield. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Green Lake Bible Camp in Spicer, Minnesota.
Mary Ann (Spicer) Peterson, daughter of Clarence and Mary (Gravley) Spicer, was born on September 5, 1944, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. As a young child, Mary and her family moved to Mountain Lake and then to the Redwood Falls area. She graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1962. On August 10, 1963, Mary married the love of her life, Leon Peterson. They were blessed with three children, Janelle, Lisa, and Randy. Mary worked side by side with Leon on their farm while raising their family. Mary also found time to work at the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm. In retirement, Mary and Leon moved to New Ulm six years ago.
Mary cherished being a wife, mom, and grandma. Mary's faith was central to her life. She was active at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Ladies Aid, as a Sunday School teacher & superintendent, and wherever she could be of service. She was also involved with Via de Cristo and MN Wings motorcycle events with Leon. She will be remembered for the beautiful quilts she created. She also enjoyed her roses, was a 4-H member and leader, and will be remembered for all the goodies she loved baking, especially her Rice Krispie bars.
Mary is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leon Peterson of New Ulm; children, Janelle (Dan) Gullickson of New Prague, Lisa (Todd) Jacoby of Lake Crystal, and Randy (Rosie) Peterson of Mankato; grandchildren, Dr. Matthew (Dr. Amy) Gullickson, Dr. Mitchell (Emma) Gullickson MD, Alex Gullickson, Sierra Roiger, Caleb Peterson, and Isabella Peterson; great grandson, Griffin Gullickson; step-grandchildren, Jacob Williams, Collin Lemke, and Jared Peterson; sister, Carolyn Russ of Boise, Idaho; niece, Laura Styles of Boise, Idaho; and loving friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Spicer.
