Marie Grothaus-Falk, daughter of Peter and Marie (Hackbarth) Schoen was born in Farwell, MN on May 11, 1908. She was baptized as an infant at the German Lutheran Church in Maple Lake, MN. Her father was a depot agent for the Sioux Line Railroad. In 1913 she moved with her parents to a farm located 3 miles north of Delft, MN. She received her education in Cottonwood County District 14 country school located in Delton Township, Cottonwood County, MN. She married Wilbur C. Grothaus on February 27, 1935. To this union one son was born. After their marriage they farmed ten miles northwest of Mountain Lake until the spring of 1948, at which time they moved to a farm three miles northwest of Mountain Lake. They continued farming there until Mr.Grothaus' ill health forced them to retire in the fall of 1965 and purchase a home in Mountain Lake. Mr. Grothaus died February 1, 1970. On April 4, 1985, she was united in marriage to Henry P. Falk at the First Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake. The couple made their home in Mountain Lake until Mr. Falk's death on July 3, 1993. Marie continued to live in their home until she had a stroke in June 1994. After a short hospital stay she entered the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake on July 15,1994. She served as President of the Good Samaritan Village Resident's Council until she had to resign for health reasons. She was an active member in Extension Project Club, 4-H and the Farmers Union. She worked at the Mountain Lake Public School cafeteria for several years and also was the first manager of the Mountain Lake Senior Citizens Meal Site where she worked for a number of years. She enjoyed needlework, reading, cooking, gardening, flowers and spending time with her family and friends. Marie Grothaus-Falk, Age 98, of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, died Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake. Marie is survived by one son and his wife, Henry and Kathy Grothaus of Afton, MN; two grandsons, Patrick and Erica Grothaus of Brookings, SD and James and Amy Grothaus of Hudson, WI; three great-grandchildren Jacob and Emma of Brookings, SD and Olivia of Hudson, WI; one sister-in-law Mrs. Harold (Erma Lou) Grothaus of Onamia, MN; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was proceeded in death by her parents; two husbands; three sisters, Elta Gunderson, Hazel Jessen and Pearl Sykora;and two grandsons.
