Margaret “Peggy” Jean Nelson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024, at Birchwood Cottages in North Mankato, MN. She was 67 years old.
Peggy was born on February 15, 1957, in Madelia, MN, to Walter and Dorothy (Martin) Smith. She spent her childhood in Madelia, forming lifelong friendships and developing a love for learning. After graduating from Madelia High School in 1975, she attended Mankato State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Peggy dedicated 35 years to teaching young minds in Madelia, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
On August 27, 1977, Peggy married the love of her life, Rick Nelson. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared 47 wonderful years of marriage.
Peggy is survived by her devoted husband, Rick; her children, Ben Nelson and Sarah (Josh) Pfeffer; and her cherished grandchildren, Zoe and Anna Nelson, and Hailey, Dylan, and Zachary Pfeffer; her sisters, Kathy (Harry) Love of Bakersfield, CA, and Betty (Jim) Christenson of Worthington, MN, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, Walter and Dorothy Smith, and her brothers, Thomas, Jim, and Rick Smith, preceded her in death.
Peggy’s life was a testament to the joys of family, friendship, and the simple pleasures of life. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Whether it was enjoying the serenity of the family cabin, exploring the outdoors, traveling, or bowling, Peggy embraced every moment with enthusiasm and joy.
Peggy’s warmth, kindness, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She leaves a legacy of love and dedication, as well as the countless lives she touched through her teaching and personal life.
Rest in peace, Peggy. Your memory will forever remain in our hearts.
Peggy’s visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Sturm Funeral Home in Madelia, MN, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
