Madelyn Snyder

November 14, 1940 — January 14, 2014

Madelyn Rose (Hankins) Snyder, 73, of Madelia died January 14, 2014 at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia under hospice care. Madi was born on November 14, 1940 in St. Peter, MN to William and Mildred (Keogh) Hankins of rural Cleveland, MN. Madi graduated from Cleveland High School in 1959. She then attended the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN and graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1963. She taught school at St. James for a few years where she met her husband John Martin Snyder of Madelia. They married at the Church of Nativity in Cleveland on November 27, 1965. The couple resided on their angus cattle farm in rural Madelia for many years raising a loving family of four children; Daniel, Sarah, Nathan, and Keith before later moving into town. Madi was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and very active in her church activities, circle, and bible study group. Madi's warm smile welcomed many as the manager of Dueber's department store for 30 years. She was smart, outgoing, friendly, and had an infectious laugh. Madi was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, belonged to several bridge groups, and a book club. She enjoyed reading, cards, crocheting, sewing, and family genealogy. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, many friends, and grandchildren. She always advised not to love things that can't love you back. Madi could make almost anything into a grand story and had a twinkle in her eye as she made tongue-in-cheek jokes. Madi was greatly loved and her death broke many hearts. Madi is survived by her children Daniel of Kasson, Sarah of Seattle, Nathan of Bloomington and Keith of North Mankato; grandchildren Ivy, Camille and Rhiley; brother William (Lucille) Hankins of Cleveland; sisters-in-laws Joan Hankins of Colorado Springs, Irene Hankins of Le Center and Teresa Hankins of Litchfield. She is preceded in death by her husband John, parents William and Mildred, brothers Donald, John F "Red" and Bernard; sister and brother-in-law Mary and John F. Traxler.
