Mabel (Braun) Haala died on February 5, 2013, at Divine Providence Nursing Home in Sleepy Eye, MN. She was born on May 25, 1915, in Brown County, MN, the daughter of George and Minnie (Manderfeld) Braun. Mabel was a teacher, housewife, and farmwife. She taught in District 45 country school for three years, District 46 country school for two years, and then quit teaching to raise her family, and together with her husband Elmer, operate their crop and dairy farm. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on May 8, 1939. She returned to teaching when their youngest daughter started school, and taught third grade at St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye for ten years. Mabel was also active in and held various offices in several organizations including the Council of Catholic Women, Sleepy Eye Hospital Auxiliary, Divine Providence Auxiliary, Christian Mothers and St. Margaret's Society. She loved to quilt, making several quilts on her own, but also as a member of the quilting group who met regularly at Divine Providence. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and also volunteered at the Sleepy Eye Food Shelf. Mabel was an avid card player and loved to play bingo and watch the Minnesota Twins, but most of all loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and especially the great grandchildren who could always be counted on to bring out the deck of cards. She is survived by her daughters, Marlene Schwartz of St. Peter, MN, Judy Peters of Bossier City, LA, and Barb (Jon) Jahnke of Sleepy Eye; daughter-in-law, Denise Haala of Prospect Heights, IL; grandchildren, Robb (Toni) Schwartz, Jennifer (Brent) Goraczkowski, Bill (Holly) Peters, Amy Medrano, Sarah Peters, Nicholas Jahnke, Kristin (Paul) Sprenger, and Andrew Haala; great grandchildren Megan, Jacob, Lucas, Sarah, Colton, Mason, Isabelle, Anna, Sam, Kayla and Mya; sisters, Kathryne Olson, Delores Kortz, Florence Helget and sisters-in-law Alma Braun, Orlene Kral, Delores (Sylvester) Spaeth, Gladys (Lester) Reinarts and brother-in-law, Vernard (Donna) Haala.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer, sons Elmer Jr. and Patrick, son-in-law Gary Schwartz, brothers, Norman and Howard, brother-in-law Harold Kral and brothers and sisters-in-law Walter and Mildred Haala and Wilbert and Angie Haala.
