Loretta Bertha Hedman, age 98, formerly of Sanborn, MN, died on May 11, 2026, at the Sleepy Eye Rehab Center.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026 at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at St. Mathias Catholic Cemetery in Wanda immediately after mass. Following the burial, a reception will be held at the American Legion in Wanda. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. Online Condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
Loretta Bertha Schumacher was born December 16, 1927, to Joseph and Amelica (Bauer) Schumacher on a farm southwest of Springfield, 15 minutes after her twin sister Lorraine. Both daughters were blessed with the white birthmarks (from their dad Joe) on the forehead hair and body. To this day the birthmark has been passed down throughout the family generations.
Loretta married Jerome Roiger on October 1, 1946. They had 2 children and enjoyed 4 years together before he passed away. Later she married Lawrence Baumann on February 19, 1952. They were blessed with 4 children and 12 years together before he passed away. Loretta then married Arnold Hedman on June 15, 1968. They were blessed with another child and 20 years of marriage before he passed away in 1988.
During her lifetime she held various jobs - she farmed and cared for horses with her mother, cleaned houses, worked at Sleepy Eye Pea and Corn Pack, Control data, a farm wife, Good Samaritan Home in Westbrook, Marvin Windows, and Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Loretta loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers, embroidering, making quilts with her sister and in her younger years, snowmobiling with Arnie. She received her Baptism, First Confession, First Communion, was confirmed and married at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Springfield.
Left to treasure her memory are her children – Douglas (Susan) Roiger, Daniel (Arlene) Roiger, Steven (Debra) Baumann, Janice Prunty, Robert (Laurie Baumann), Julie (Patrick) Rohlik, Verlin (Gwenda) Hedman; 15 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and her brother Cyril (Jean) Baumann. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son-in-law Michael Prunty, siblings Lorraine and Arthur, and many other beloved family members.
