Lloyd Robert 'Bob' Nyberg was born September 15, 1921 in Waseca, MN to Nels and Francie (Hanson) Nyberg. The family moved to rural Sleepy Eye in 1933. Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 2, 1942. He served with the 50th Engineers in the Pacific Theater and his first battle experience was in the Aleutians on the island of Attu in the Bering Sea. Bob also saw combat in the Marshall Islands on the island of Kwajalen, took part in the liberation of the Philippines on the island of Leyte, and served on the islands of Kiska, Adak, and then re-grouped in Hawaii. He was wounded on the island of Leyte in 1944 and spent 6 months in hospitals in New Guinea and El Paso, TX. Bob went to fight forest fires in the state of Washington while waiting for his discharge in 1945. He was awarded the Purple Cross and many other medals. Bob was united in marriage to Helen Brandt on June 1, 1946 and the couple moved to Lamberton where Bob worked for Lamberton Hatchery until 1948. They then moved north of Lamberton where they farmed until retirement in 1987, then moved into Lamberton. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, served on the Lamberton Township board for 10 years, was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., and was a member of Andrew Peterson American Legion Post #41 where he served as Commander in 1979. Bob enjoyed playing cards, playing pool, fishing, and coffee with friends at Cenex and Sackett's. He considered his Army buddies as his extended family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by wife Helen of Lamberton; son Richard (Lottie) Nyberg of Elk River; daughter Sharon (Paul) Reinsma of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren- Justin Reinsma, Georgia Nyberg, Jeremy Nyberg, and Amy (Jeremy) Nyberg Humphrey; and great-grandchildren- Mike Nyberg, Mason Johnson, Kayla Nyberg, Callie Humphrey, and Owen Humphrey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Francie; granddaughter Michelle Shellberger; brothers- Laurel and Ardell; and sisters- Pearl Fink and Anna Mae Marquardt.
