Lillian Warnemunde, age 97, of St. James, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society - Pleasant View in St. James. Memorial services will be 2pm, Saturday, July 23rd, at First Presbyterian Church in St. James with Rev. David Lick officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Lillian Mae Michelsen was born on August 15, 1924, in DeSoto, Nebraska, the daughter of Ollie and Catherine (Carstensen) Michelsen. When she was about a year old, the family moved to Oakland, NE, where she grew-up. On June 14, 1941, Lillian married Russell Warnemunde. The couple made their home in St. James where they farmed, just east of town, for some 38 years. The couple raised their five children: Bill, LaVonne, Julie, Dick and Randy. They moved into town because of Russells health. He died in 1981. Lillian loved to farm and worked hard. They were members of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She started the Jolly Homemakers Extension Club along with Jeannette Johnson and Loy Trowbridge which ran until 2011. Lillian loved to do embroidery work, crochet, sew, and knit. She and Russell enjoyed dancing, playing cards of all kinds, and travelling. They travelled around the United States, Europe, and Central America. They spent their winters in Arizona, purchasing a place of their own in 1979. She continued to winter there for 30 years. She is survived by her children: LaVonne Hawkinson of Apple Valley, Dick Warnemunde of Rapid City, SD, Julie McWalter of East Grand Forks, Randy Warmnemunde of Rapid City, SD, 11 grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, sister Catherine Martinson of Butterfield, sister-in-law Lila Jean Mathias of St. James and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her son Bill, parents, 3 husbands, an infant twin brother Lawrence and brothers Art, Glenn, Leonard and Elmer Buddy, and sister Viola Hultman.
