Leona Platz

Leona A. Platz was born on July 17, 1926, the daughter of Edward J. and Matilda (Seidl) Sellner. She attended country school #33 and St. Mary's Catholic School in Sleepy Eye. She worked for several families as a housekeeper and for Pietrus for 3 years. She was united in marriage to Vernon Platz on November 29, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple farmed together until their retirement in 1979. Leona moved into Springfield in 2000. She was a member of a St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield where she participated in CCW and St. Monica's Court. She received the Bishop's Medal of Honor and the St. Boniface Community Service Award. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years, sang for the church and funeral choirs and crocheted baby afghans for the fall festival. Leona enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, and time with family and friends; especially her grandchildren. Leona died on Monday, November 24, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 88 years. She is survived by her children - Anthony (Dorothy) Platz of Park Rapids, MN, Jane (Niels) Hemmingsen of Sparks, NV, Jeanette "Nettie" (James) Balbach of Bertha, MN, Dennis (Jennifer) Platz of Walker, MN, Janice (Keith) Sams of Cedar Rapids, IA, Michael (Clarice) Platz of Springfield, MN, Jody (Neil) Ryan of Springfield, MN, Jon (Pam) Platz of Franklin, MN, and Vernon Snoopy (Laura) Platz of Springfield, MN; grandchildren; great grandchildren; brothers - Paul (Helen) Sellner of Sioux Falls, SD, Florian (Patty) Sellner of Sleepy Eye, MN, and Larry (Sandy) Sellner of Sleepy Eye, MN; and sisters - Mildred Baker of Sleepy Eye, MN, Patricia Seifert of New Ulm, MN, Phyllis Westman of Sleepy Eye, MN, Melania Meyer of Sleepy Eye, MN, Rosella (James) Stimpert of Sleepy Eye, MN, Joyce (Gary) Berg of Sleepy Eye, MN, and Beatricce (Tom) Koop of Courtland, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband - Vernon; sisters - Mary Ann Rodewald and Rita Seifert; brothers - Eddie and Raymond Sellner; 5 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.
