The family is designating memorials to Wycliffe Bible Translators and World Impact. Leona Susie Ewert, daughter of Jacob and Anna Ewert, was born in Main Centre, Saskatchewan, Canada on December 3, 1911. She was the second of five children and worked along with brothers and sisters in performing duties and helping host many people in their home as part of her father's ministry as evangelist of the Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1921 she moved to Mountain Lake, Minnesota with her parents and brothers and sisters. She accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour in 1923 and was baptized the same year. Her salvation verse was I Peter 1:18,19. One of her many favorite Bible verses was Trust in Him at all times ye people, pour out your heart before Him, God is our refuge for us. Psalm 62:8 Leona attended Mountain Lake Bible School through the eighth grade and then graduated from Mountain Lake High School. She went on to Normal School in Windom and also Mankato Teachers College. She taught in various schools for thirteen years after which she worked at Eventide Home as a nurses aide for twenty-two years. Following her mother's stroke, she cared for her in her home for 2 years. She entered the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake on December 26, 2002. Leona was involved in many activities such as helping in the Mission Society and church library, teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir and Ladies Chorus. For a number of years she prepared church bulletins to send to non-resident members and missionaries. Leona was also an avid gardener and spent many hours making quilt tops for people in need. We as a family remember the personal birthday cards she made for us and our children. We also enjoyed receiving old letters we had written over the years. It was special for all of us to hear of her many answers to prayer. We are grateful for her many friends and their acts of kindness on her behalf. Leona was a special person to us and her many prayers were especially appreciated. Leona died at the Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Lake on Friday, April 18, 2008, at the age of 96. Those of us who will miss her very much include one brother Albert and wife Mae Ewert from Dinuba, CA; one sister Elsie Groening of Hillsboro, KS and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Anna Ewert, her sister Linda Braun and brother John Ewert.
