Leon Warkentin

September 28, 1935 — June 9, 2014

Leon Henry Warkentin was born on September 28, 1935 in Bingham Lake to Henry D. and Marie (Ratzlaff) Warkentin. He spent his first 11 years in rural Bingham Lake. He received Christ into his life and, upon confession of faith in his Savior, was baptized at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren (now Cornerstone Bible) Church. In 1957, Leon graduated from Mountain Lake High School and began doing carpentry with his father from whom he learned the skills for a lifetime. He volunteered for Mennonite Central Committee in Maryland for two years. While there, he met Pearl Strite and they were wed in 1963 and to this union were born two daughters: Jeanette and Jennifer. After their divorce, he moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia where he continued his work as a master finishing carpenter and did historical restoration and reproduction. He was a very active member of Westview Baptist Church and did maintenance and repairs at All Saints School in Manassas, VA. In 2009, Leon returned to Mt. Lake to be near family. Besides his love of wood working, he enjoyed watching sports (especially baseball and football), and driving. He volunteered as a driver, taking people to Worthington and elsewhere for their health needs. A faithful attendee of Cornerstone Bible Church, Leon was also an active member of the Lakeview Gospel Senior Bible Study. Leon Warkentin is survived by his biological and adopted children: Jeanette Warkentin, Jennifer (Dallas) Cox, Lorinda, Nikki, and Jason Warkentin, siblings: Ellen (Dave) Anderson, Savage; Karen (Dave) Erickson, Vancouver, WA; Elizabeth (Chuck) Selander, Alexandria; Violet (Gary) Jansick, Fridley; and Timothy (Mary) Warkentin, Concordia, KS; grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
